The reskinning game has changed.
In fact, it looks like a lot of developers have stopped making apps altogether.
There are a number of reasons for this:
1000 new apps appear in the App Store every day.
Some old monetization tactics (e.g. interstitial ads at startup) and app business models (e.g., quantity over quality) aren’t viable anymore.
Beautiful design is KING.
Apple may reject unattractive reskins.
Trends and tastes have changed.
What does this mean for app developers who are still in the game?
Well, for starters, I’d say it means don’t spend hundreds of dev hours and thousands of dollars until you’ve validated a market. It’s better to first publish a simple app to gain traction. You can iterate later, adding features and increasing the app’s value.

We’re excited to introduce the source code for the hit game Spermy’s Journey for iOS and Android.
To date, it has gotten over 4.5 million total downloads on the App Store and Google Play . With some decent design, you should be able to reskin the game and make your money back quickly. And experienced devs can reskin the game in 10 hours or less.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me first introduce the game with a little backstory and tell you about the success of the original game. Some of you may know the name Brian Appell. (His last name is apropos, don’t you think?) Brian helped legitimize reskinning when he launched his original Avalanche Mountain code, and he’s been putting out great games and reasonably priced codes every since.
Ronald Watson got in touch with me out of the blue, and asked if I’d be willing to promote his source code on BrightNewt.com.
Lots of these emails have appeared in my inbox over the past twelve months, and to be honest, I ignore most of them. But Ronald’s grabbed my attention because his game had one very important characteristic: it has made a lot of money.
If you’d like to see proof, you can check out the numbers for iOS here and Google Play here .
The Dino Fight 3D source code is available for the first time ever, and is only available on BrightNewt.com.
When I first saw the title of this article, I had to read it: “ 7,000 app developers in 127 countries say e-commerce is now the best mobile monetization strategy .” Though my first attempt at mobile e-commerce had been a bust, it was time to develop an ecommerce app source code.
That Time When 5430 Clicks Earned Me $0
Back in the summer of 2012, I found a clever way to integrate an affiliate link for a mustache tie clip. Anytime a user added the tie clip mage to a photo, an icon with three dollar signs—$$$—popped up in the upper righthand corner of the screen.
Bigger isn’t always better. Keep reading about the quiz source code , and you’ll understand why.
The app world is exciting. It’s pulsing with potential. I hear a new “success” story every week. But for every overnight millionaire made in the App Store, another hundred developers will walk away empty-handed. (I made up that stat, but you get the picture.)
Want a little free business advice? Start small.
Don’t try to put all your eggs in one app basket. Don’t use your best idea to try to make your first (or even your fifth) app. To make a really successful app, you’ll probably need a decent budget. If you are anything like I was, you don’t have that at the very beginning.
Never create a piece of software you can only sell once.
Thankfully, I picked up this lesson somewhere while I was creating my first app, Mustache Bash, and I also applied it while creating a sound effects source code for iOS. At the time, I didn’t know that I would end up licensing the source codes for my various apps to other indie developers.
But I thought it made sense to create the apps in such a way that the codes would be easy to reuse. Source codes are the digital equivalent of modular homes. The basic user interface and layout stays the same, but the paint colors and other details change.
I love Copycat Echo . It’s a Simon game source code for iOS, and the graphics are awesome.
They remind me of arcade games from the Eighties and Nineties.
The game itself is easy to learn but difficult to master. My two sisters and I and all of our first cousins in Nashville grew up playing Simon , the handheld electronic memory game from Milton Bradley (a company that Hasbro later bought).
The game has four colored panels, each with a unique sound. To play the game, you watch the colors, listen to the sounds, and punch in the same sequence.
This app story has a very happy ending.
But I’m going to be very candid about the sordid past of my jokes app, Best Stupid Jokes and Puns Free. For a while there, I thought it was going to be a total dud. The thought of putting up this iOS source for sale would have been laughable.
The Christmas season is supposed to be the best month of the year for app revenue, and in December 2012, Fast Laugh Jokes—which was the app’s title at the time—made $7.00. And that was an improvement over past months. Ouch. I guess the joke was on me.
