In the United States, tax season is upon us, and everyone’s thinking about how to manage finances.
[Raise your hand if you feel like you just figured out 2013 taxes. Sigh.]
Tax season presents an opportunity to do something different for the next fiscal year and to expect different results.
One of the biggest challenges for small business owners is budgeting. Your employees get a steady paycheck, but you often don’t! And if your business involves client work, then you might be accustomed to billing $4350 in February and billing $9725 in March. You can get totally slammed with new projects in April and see a tumbleweed blow through your deserted workdays in May.

I subscribe to Chris Guillebeau’s blog , and his recent blog post about writer’s block offered a helpful writing prompt: write about the last thing you learned.
The first thing that came to mind was this: the enduring value of helpfulness.
Jay Baer’s book Youtility , which I read last week, begins with a simple thesis: make your marketing so valuable that people would be willing to pay for it. “An ugly website can make you look amateurish,” says Austin Church in Appiness, the app marketing guide he released in January 2014. “With this in mind, you should create a dedicated page for each of your apps on your website, or better yet, a website for every app.”
So how do you make an attractive website? I decided to dig deeper and do a little research.
I heard the name Simon Sinek after a client send me a link to his TED talk, “ How Great Leaders Inspire Action .”
After watching the video multiple times and scribbling notes, I happily shared the link with my other clients, thinking to impress them with my good taste in viral videos and to coax them to apply Sinek’s ideas to their brands. When in doubt, just send ‘em a TED video, right?
As it turns out, I was late to the party. This is par for the course. Adele , Gangam Style , Harlem Shake videos, Evernote—if the latest internet phenomenon is hilarious, ridiculous, or useful, I’m usually the last one to hear about it. Sinek’s book Start with Why has lived in the Top 100 of Amazon’s Leadership and Business Management categories for a couple of years now, and the video on TED.com has over 13 million views.
