The short answer to this question is there is no short answer. You can reskin a code as many times as you like, but fewer reskins—like fewer black eyes—may improve the appearance of your portfolio.

Apple has established no clear precedent, and in typical Apple fashion, when they do flag an account, they aren’t necessarily forthcoming with all of the factors in their decision. This smoke-and-mirrors approach to what is “permissible” makes it difficult to say with certainty, “You’re safe if you stand there, but stepping over this line will get you into trouble.”

This post was guest written by Sean Nam. Sean has purchased and reskinned some of our source code, and done so quite well. We invited him to share some of his thoughts.

“An ugly website can make you look amateurish,” says Austin Church in Appiness, the app marketing guide he released in January 2014. “With this in mind, you should create a dedicated page for each of your apps on your website, or better yet, a website for every app.”

So how do you make an attractive website? I decided to dig deeper and do a little research.

If you make apps, you have a problem. I’d like to help you fix it, but before I share more details about Appiness and making money with apps, let me explain the problem.

The App Store now has over one million apps from 350,000 developers. 1,000,000 apps. That’s a lot of zeroes! And only 25 of those “brand name” developers, including King (of Candy Crush Saga fame) and Super Cell, who made Clash of Clans and Hay Day, make 50% of the revenue—or approximately $60,000,000 per month.

Let’s get down to some straight talk about developing mobile apps and app marketing.

If you’re new to the app game, then you might not have heard of a practice called “reskinning.” To create a reskin, you simply buy a “source code” from another developer—that is, the code engine that drives the app or an “app starter kit” —and swap out the graphics. Voila! You now have an app that Apple recognizes as unique.

For example, I used the Mustache Bash source code to create another photo booth app. Christmas Pictures has the same core functionality as MB, but rather than mustaches, I put in Santa beards, scarves, reindeer, and other holiday-themed paraphernalia. Cute, right?
