In the United States, tax season is upon us, and everyone’s thinking about how to manage finances.
[Raise your hand if you feel like you just figured out 2013 taxes. Sigh.]
Tax season presents an opportunity to do something different for the next fiscal year and to expect different results.
One of the biggest challenges for small business owners is budgeting. Your employees get a steady paycheck, but you often don’t! And if your business involves client work, then you might be accustomed to billing $4350 in February and billing $9725 in March. You can get totally slammed with new projects in April and see a tumbleweed blow through your deserted workdays in May.

The reskinning game has changed.
In fact, it looks like a lot of developers have stopped making apps altogether.
There are a number of reasons for this:
1000 new apps appear in the App Store every day.
Some old monetization tactics (e.g. interstitial ads at startup) and app business models (e.g., quantity over quality) aren’t viable anymore.
Beautiful design is KING.
Apple may reject unattractive reskins.
Trends and tastes have changed.
What does this mean for app developers who are still in the game?
Well, for starters, I’d say it means don’t spend hundreds of dev hours and thousands of dollars until you’ve validated a market. It’s better to first publish a simple app to gain traction. You can iterate later, adding features and increasing the app’s value.
We’re excited to introduce the source code for the hit game Spermy’s Journey for iOS and Android.
To date, it has gotten over 4.5 million total downloads on the App Store and Google Play . With some decent design, you should be able to reskin the game and make your money back quickly. And experienced devs can reskin the game in 10 hours or less.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me first introduce the game with a little backstory and tell you about the success of the original game. Some of you may know the name Brian Appell. (His last name is apropos, don’t you think?) Brian helped legitimize reskinning when he launched his original Avalanche Mountain code, and he’s been putting out great games and reasonably priced codes every since.
Ronald Watson got in touch with me out of the blue, and asked if I’d be willing to promote his source code on BrightNewt.com.
Lots of these emails have appeared in my inbox over the past twelve months, and to be honest, I ignore most of them. But Ronald’s grabbed my attention because his game had one very important characteristic: it has made a lot of money.
If you’d like to see proof, you can check out the numbers for iOS here and Google Play here .
The Dino Fight 3D source code is available for the first time ever, and is only available on BrightNewt.com.
The difference between iOS and Android app development is the difference between apples and bananas. They fall into the same category (mobile operating systems, or fruits), but that’s where most of the similarities end. Here are six differences:
iOS and Android are separate mobile operating systems the same way that Mac OSX and Windows are separating desktop operating systems.
They involve different programming languages. iOS uses Objective-C. Android uses Java.
Android is to some extent “open source.” iOS is not. You may have noticed that there are quite a few different Android app stores not associated with Google and independent of the Google Play store. But Apple controls all of the App Stores for 100+ countries.
Only three devices manufactured by Apple run iOS: iPads, iPods, and iPhones. Hundreds of devices from dozens of companies run Android.
An iOS developer license from Apple will set you back $99 a year , but Google simply charges a one-time fee of $25 .
To develop for iOS, you’ll need a Mac. To develop for Android, you’ll be better off with a PC.
Google designed Android to be a huge sandbox. They have made it easy for developers to access the Android and work with it. You can publish your Android apps without waiting for anyone to review them. The Apple sandbox is rather small and controlled by comparison. Waiting for the Apple review team to approve or reject your app can take anywhere from 5-14 business days .
The short answer to this question is there is no short answer. You can reskin a code as many times as you like, but fewer reskins—like fewer black eyes—may improve the appearance of your portfolio.
Apple has established no clear precedent, and in typical Apple fashion, when they do flag an account, they aren’t necessarily forthcoming with all of the factors in their decision. This smoke-and-mirrors approach to what is “permissible” makes it difficult to say with certainty, “You’re safe if you stand there, but stepping over this line will get you into trouble.”
